The broader markets also turned lower with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices falling 0.3-0.5 percent. 

     The market breadth was weak too as about two shares declined for every share rising on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
    Sun Pharma extended losses in morning trade, down 5 percent after its Q4 earnings fell short of expectations.
     Infosys, L&T, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, GAIL and Coal India declined 1-2 percent while Lupin, Maruti Suzuki and NTPC outperformed, up over a percent.
     Tata Motors jumped 7 percent on solid earnings performance in Q4.
     Sun Pharma 's net profit was Rs 1,713.7 crore in the fourth quarter of FY16, below CNBC-TV18's poll estimate of Rs 1,888.4 crore.

       Tata Motors today posted three-fold rise in its consolidated net profit at Rs 5,177.06 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, driven by strong performance of its British arm JLR and robust volume growth of its heavy and medium commercial vehicles.

Indian Stock Market Closing Updates: Nifty end flat

The BSE Sensex opened at 23,060, touched an intra-day high of 23,161 and low of 22,600. It finally ended with a gain of 34 points at 22,986.

The NSE Nifty opened at 7,023 hitting a high of 7,035 and low of 6,981, before ending with a gain of mere four points at 6,981. 

The India VIX (Volatility) index was up 7.25% to 21.7275.

Out of 1,788 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,113 declined and 430 advanced today.

Idea Cellular, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, Cairn India, M&M, Axis Bank and NTPC were among the gainers on NSE, whereas BHEL, BPCL, PNB, Adani Ports, ONGC, Hindalco, L&T, ICICI Bank and Tata Steel were among the losers today.

A total of 10 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trades today, while 422 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.

US stock indices declined for a fifth successive session on Thursday, dragged lower by the ongoing global turmoil in the financial markets and lingering worries over falling oil prices.  

GoAir is planning to hire Goldman, Kotak Bank and BOFA-ML to manage its $150mn IPO, according to reports.

Trent Ltd. on Thursday said that online retailer Amazon.com Inc has bought a 26% stake in its publishing unit Westland for about INR 9.5 crore.

Indian Rupee opened weaker by 9 paise at 68.38/$ in early trade on Friday as against the previous close of 68.30/$.

Sensex slips 100 points

The S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 23,890 down 130 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 7,260 down 38 points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading down 0.14% at 10,099, whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading down 0.17% at 10,408.

The INDIA VIX is up 2.09% at 22.1825. Out of 1,738 stocks traded on the NSE, 776 declined and 537 advanced today.
